Road Fatalities

Safety on the road is most important because it saves lives. Saving lives do not only depend on members of the emergency ambulance service or fire men and fire women, but it comes down to the average commuter. An average of 3,400 people die each day on the road every year. Between 20 to 50 million people globally are damaged or injured each year.(WHO 2013)

The person who travels from home to work and back everyday is very important when measuring the level of road fatalities. Most people who are involved in a road fatality and die do so within the first 10 minutes after the accident. According to the Buylaert study, 1999, more than 50 percent of deaths from traffic accidents occur in the first few minutes after the crash. Interesting to learn that most drivers do lend a hand when at the scene of the crash. Driving can become very tedious and tiresome at times and can result in great danger to the driver, passengers and unsuspecting travelers nearby. Public awareness in road safety is necessary for all driving on the roads to be smooth and hazard-less. Defensive driving classes before taking up driving is encouraged. It is important to act confident at an accident. It may be a deciding factor between life and death between the moment the accident occurs and paramedics arrive. Speed limits should be followed at all times. The police do not monitor every junction but we do interact with other cars and for a steady flow of traffic, traffic laws must be obeyed.

Do not hesitate to call the police or fire station or ambulance when a crash occurs. It is the public's duty to report an incident as it happens, immediately. The best method to avoid road fatalities is prevention. Do not drink and drive. Do not break the law. Your life is in your hands and the persons car next to you.
